Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are the main primary producers of the marine food web. They take energy from the sunlight to fuel themselves. Phytoplanton can only survive in the photic layer of the sea (the depth at which enough sunlight penetrates to keep them alive). Most are single celled and microscopic. Many of the minerals they need to survive come from the wastes of animals and decomposers.
