Issue #1 - Exploring the Fluid Frontier
Is
space really the final frontier - or is it our oceans!? We still
have much to learn about the ecology and physiology of the amazing
inhabitants of the marine community. This issue of OceanNews explores
advancements in technology that are helping us better understand
the ocean environment. The use of sonar to map the ocean floor,
a history of diving technology and highlights of Canadian inventions
are all included! OceanNews then takes you into the mysterious world
of the deep ocean for a closer look at hydrothermal vent communities
and some incredible "Creeps of the Deep"!

Issue #2 - Marine Mammals
Anyone
who has seen a whale or a sea lion in the wild knows what an amazing
and unforgettable experience it is! This issue is dedicated to marine
mammals - our aquatic counterparts.
"Marine mammals"; is full
of information about the over-hunting and (sometimes) recovery of
different cetacean and pinniped species. You can also read inter-views
with scientists studying such topics as the return of sea otters
to Vancouver Island, the unique
feeding habits, of Humpback Whales, and the use of unique feeding
tags to follow a whale's movements. Learn about how the terrestrial
ancestors of marine mammals adapted to the cold, harsh ocean waters!

#3 - Seabirds
The
early seabird catches the fish! This issue of OceanNews is so jam-packed
with cool seabird facts, you will fly through it! Although
seabirds make up only 3% of the 8600 bird species world wide, their
huge populations (sometimes in the millions) makes them one of the
most abundant type of bird around. In this issue, Dr. Alan Berger
explains
the importance of studying seabirds, learn about the threatened
Marbled Murrelet, and examine some causes of seabird decline. Also
included are some fun activities to help you learn more about special
seabird adaptations.

#4 - Marine Pollution

What's that?! Down in the water!
It's a shark! It's a whale! No! It's an old rubber boot, attached
to a patched tire, dangling some tin cans. It's Marine Pollution!
Standing on the beach, looking out at a seemingly endless expanse
of ocean, the surface appears clear and serene. No signs of the
clear-cuts, open pit mines, or land fills that you see on land.
However, below the surface (and sometimes on top of it), there is
trouble brewing. Issue 4, Marine Pollution, explores the "ecological
shadow"; that humans leave on the ocean environment. Learn
about different types of pollution and how they impact environments
such as the Georgia Strait and the organisms that live there. Read
about an environmental success story through an interview with Dr.
Gail Bellward. This issue also includes a fantastic colour poster
comparing an environmentally friendly town with "Pollutes-ville"!
Check out this issue for great tips about reducing the size of your
own ecological shadow!

Issue #5 PDF

The
oceans supply much of the food that we need to survive. The big
question we explore in this issue of Ocean News is: How do we ensure
that our oceans are healthy and plentiful enough to feed us in the
future? This issue of Ocean News examines these questions and more.

Issue #6 PDF

Change
in climate is not new to this planet. Over the last few billion
years the earth has had tropical forests spread across entire continents
with dinosaurs tromping over the lands, ice sheets covering most
of the Northern Hemisphere, and sea levels dropped enough to allow
people to walk between present day Russia and Alaska. These changes
were not easy on organisms living back then, and many ecosystems
suffered greatly as dramatic changes took place. This issue of Ocean
News examines climate change its effect on plants, animals and humans,
and what you need to know.
